Scott-Spicer, who replaces Thea Stein – now chief executive of Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust – takes up her role on 16 February.

She said: "I am honoured to be appointed to lead such an important and relevant charity. I look forward to continuing to improve the lives of the seven million unpaid carers who work tirelessly every day in our communities across the United Kingdom."

Before her role at The Scout Association, Scott-Spicer was a deputy chief executive of the charity leaders' body, the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations.

She also had stints at Transport for London and as an appointee to the leadership team at the National Council for Voluntary Organisations.

Scott-Spicer is also currently vice-chair of the charity comms body, CharityComms.
