The company, which provides finance and insurance services to UK Volkswagen customers, is looking for an agency that specialises in corporate and financial comms, possibly with a consumer comms element as well.
Another option would be to appoint separate corporate and consumer agencies, said Volkswagen Financial Services UK corporate communications manager Paul Baylis.
"Early new year is when we want to kick the process off. I want to get a short list at least by the end of January."
Baylis said the company wants to raise its profile to be recognised as among the leaders in the sector.
"I’d like to be in a situation where if anybody wanted to have comment on the industry they’d come to us," he said.
"It’s about establishing that tone of voice. Yes, there will be some elements of the corporate side we’ll communicate – some acquisitions in the future maybe, or some office moves – but owning that sector is where we want to be."
This would be the first time Volkswagen Financial Services has appointed a central agency, although agencies have been used in an ad hoc basis in the past.
