Power Book 2015: Top PR figures increasingly report directly to CEOs

Senior UK PR practitioners increasingly report directly to the chief executives of their organisations, according to feedback from entrants to PRWeek's Power Book list.

Of those who answered the question about whom they report to, 102 said their CEO. That is nearly seven times the number (16) who stated they answer to the top marketing person, belying suggestions that comms is necessarily subservient to its marketing or advertising counterparts.

A further 19 report directly to the chairman, while others take orders from whoever else is the most senior figure in their organisation. Twelve report directly to the board.

The second most popular answer to the question was "myself" or "nobody", reflecting the many PR entrepreneurs with autonomy over their own businesses.

Others gave more left-field answers. "God and my tailor," quipped Gerry Hopkinson, co-founder of PR agency Unity. Four said they report to their wives – but, interestingly, none to their husbands.
