NEW YORK: Hill+Knowlton Strategies has appointed Chris Winans, previously with Promontory Financial Group, as GM of its New York office, effective next Monday.

Winans, most recently chief of communications and marketing at Promontory, will succeed Ian Bailey, who stepped down from the role of EVP and GM of New York in August. Winans will report directly to Mike Coates, president and CEO of H+K Americas.

Prior to Promontory, Winans served as SVP of external affairs at AXA US, VP of media relations at AIG, and VP in Lehman Brothers’ equity research division. He was also previously national news editor at The Wall Street Journal for 10 years after having spent seven years as a journalist at various outlets.

Representatives from H+K were not immediately available for comment.

Winans’ appointment follows several executive changes at the WPP firm in recent months, including the departure of former US president and CEO Andy Weitz. The agency tapped Coates, previously chairman and CEO of H+K Canada, as chief executive of the Americas in July.

Weitz joined insurance and risk-management company Aon as SVP of global marketing and communications at the start of the month.
