TORRANCE, CA: Volkswagen Group of America communications leader Scott Vazin will join Toyota North America as VP of corporate and regional communications next week.

Vazin will start at Toyota next Monday. He will initially work from the company’s Washington, DC, office before relocating to its new base in Plano, Texas.

Toyota said in April that it is opening a new headquarters in Plano, Texas, for its North American operations. The move was designed to better serve customers and position Toyota for sustainable, long-term growth, it said in a statement.

"As part of that process, Toyota is creating a more effective, unified, and integrated communications organization for the future," the automotive company said in the statement. "The improved corporate communications team will strengthen Toyota’s ability to put customers first and to continue making great products that exceed their expectations."

Vazin could not be immediately reached for comment.

Volkswagen said Thursday in a statement that Vazin will be replaced by Mario Guerreiro, who will oversee all aspects of communications for the Volkswagen Group and brand in the US, including corporate media relations, PR campaigns, brand communications, and internal comms.

Guerreiro was most recently head of international communications in group communications at Volkswagen Group’s headquarters in Germany. In that role, he oversaw global product and corporate communications.

Vazin moved into his most recent role as EVP of group communications at Volkswagen Group of America in June after Tony Cervone left to rejoin General Motors the previous month. He reported to Volkswagen America president and CEO Michael Horn in the role, overseeing a team of ten staffers, and he led all aspects of corporate communications for the Volkswagen group and Volkswagen brand.

He started working at Volkswagen in March 2011, initially serving as VP of communications before he was promoted to VP and CCO, then his most recent role as EVP of group communications this summer.

Previously, he was director of product and consumer PR for Nissan North America and GM of corporate communications for Nissan Europe, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Vazin started his career in automotive communications at Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America in California in 1990.

This story was updated on September 18 with information about Vazin's replacement at Volkswagen.
