BENTONVILLE, AR: Walmart VP of communications David Tovar is leaving the company at the end of the month.
Tovar does not yet have a new job lined up, he explained via email.
"I am a better person and a better professional as a result of my time at Walmart and I am eternally grateful for all of the wonderful people I’ve had the opportunity to work with and learn from," he wrote in the email.
Tovar told PRWeek that he is leaving Walmart because "this just felt like the right time to move on and start a new adventure."
"As a person from the Northeast, I never thought I’d take a job in Arkansas and then stay here for eight years," he said. "It’s been an amazing experience, and I’ll definitely miss it."
Tovar added that Walmart’s communications team has doubled in size since he joined the company.
His successor has not yet been named. In the interim, Tovar’s direct reports will take on his duties and report to corporate affairs EVP Dan Bartlett.
Walmart is looking internally and externally for Tovar’s replacement, he said, adding that he cannot share future plans at this point.
Tovar joined Walmart in 2006 as director of media relations. In 2007, he was promoted to senior director of media relations. Tovar moved into his current role, leading the company’s communications team, in 2011.
Prior to Walmart, he served as director of corporate and government affairs at Kraft Foods. Before that, he was district director of state government affairs for Altria.
