Habits: Melissa Hobley, Boots USA

VP of marketing, Boots USA

Morning ritual
Wake up at 5:45 for coffee and to give myself a little time to check emails from the UK. Then it’s a morning workout, usually a kickboxing session with a trainer or a SoulCycle class.

Biggest surprise on your mobile device
How much I actually use Uber.

Daily required reading
The New York Times
, The Wall Street Journal, Business Insider, Fast Company, and Women’s Wear Daily, among others. I love Refinery29, The Cut/New York magazine, and so many other beauty blogs for trend spotting.

Best career advice
A mentor told me in college to seek a career that complemented my personality, rather than the career in law I was considering (likely with my head buried in paperwork). After several internships in politics and law, I tried a PR internship for the heck of it. I loved the blend of creativity, problem-solving, and working with people. The rest is history.

First PR job
I started my career at Coburn Communications, a fantastic New York-based PR agency, where I learned more than I could have imagined.

Most distinct aspect of your personal office
Tons of beauty products. Boots No7 is over 77 years old and invests deeply in research and development. The best part of my job is testing and trying these new products.

Most regrettable career moment
An experience that is absolutely not a regret but a surprise to many people is that I spent a few years at Buyology, a company that applied the latest developments in the science of "why we buy" to marketing. It forever changed the way I look at the deeper motivations of why we do things.

Proudest career achievement
I am so proud that Boots has a mission to democratize the beauty experience for women. Every one of our products is under $30. Women can come to Boots, get a makeover with the help of one of our beauty advisers, have access to testers and free samples, and experience our Match Made technology at a Duane Reade or Walgreens location.

Ideal day off
It starts with a workout, then a lazy morning reading the newspapers and brunch with my husband. And since we’re talking about the "ideal" day off, it can involve a trip to a spa, right?

Guilty TV pleasure
What isn’t my guilty TV pleasure? Halt and Catch Fire is maybe my favorite new show. I also love Masters of Sex, which reminds us how far we’ve come in just a few decades.
