Joseph Cohen: 40 Under 40 2013

Joseph Cohen’s passion is not only evident in his work for MWW, but in his efforts for the entire industry. As a senior member of MWW’s consumer marketing practice, he helps guide department strategy, staff development, and new business initiatives. Under his leadership, the company’s food and restaurant practice has grown notably, achieving 27.5% growth in the past year after winning a series of high-profile accounts.

Highlights include securing traditional and social media AOR duties for global restaurant chain Sbarro in 2012 and working with the Hillshire Brands Co. Having originally secured Hillshire as a client, Cohen has seen it become one of MWW’s largest accounts. Over the past year, the firm grew the business 28%, launching digital marketing and social media initiatives for the Hillshire Farm, Ball Park, and Jimmy Dean flagship brands while being named AOR for the Sara Lee Premium Deli brand.

While his day job certainly keeps him more than occupied, Cohen, who was elected the 2014 national chair and CEO of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), has worked tirelessly to educate the next generation of business leaders on the role and importance of PR. As a member of the PRSA’s national board of directors, he orchestrated the rollout of the body’s MBA initiative, a campaign to build PR coursework into MBA curricula at leading universities. Working with leading academics, he spearheaded the development of an MBA-level course to teach the strategic value of PR to business-school students. The scheme was so successful across the five campuses that the course is due to be extended nationally next year.

"Joe doesn’t see PR as just a paycheck," says Michael Kempner, president and CEO of MWW. "He comes to work every day with the goal of making positive change happen. He is a leader in every sense of the word and his commitment to excellence is clear in everything he does."
