A flavour of PPS Group's work

What did this client want PPS Group to do for them?

Cuadrilla Resources is the first company to explore for shale gas in the United Kingdom and one of the leading unconventional operators in Europe. PPS was appointed in 2011 to support Cuadrilla on its national political, media and stakeholder relations.

Any potential pitfalls you needed to take into account?

While sourcing natural gas from shale rock formations has revolutionised the energy market in North America, Cuadrilla’s operations in the UK have faced sustained scrutiny from both the media and the public as the de facto voice of the industry. The publication of the Oscar-nominated Gasland documentary highlighted the need for engagement with opinion-formers at both a national and local level.

OK, and what was your grand plan to tackle this?

From day one, PPS’s communications strategy has focused on making Cuadrilla and its operations as transparent as possible so that the government, media and opinion-formers could gain trust in the company’s corporate governance and technology. At a political level, PPS has secured a number of site visits to Lancashire for key local and national decision-makers, including the former Minister for Energy Charles Hendry MP to demonstrate the high standards at which Cuadrilla was operating.

PPS also provided comprehensive coaching for Cuadrilla’s senior management team ahead of a successful appearance before the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee in 2011. At a local level PPS has maintained an intensive programme of stakeholder engagement across the Lancashire area to build understanding and support for Cuadrilla’s operations. This has included piloting a number of educational campaigns including the successful Young Engineers 2013 in partnership with Blackpool and The Fylde College and the Blackpool Gazette.

Sounds good. What outcome did all this have on your client’s business?

PPS was awarded the 2011 PR Week Award for Issues and Crisis Management in recognition of the quality of support it provided Cuadrilla at a particularly challenging period for both it and the onshore exploration industry. PPS continues to play a leading role in Cuadrilla’s stakeholder engagement programme both in Lancashire and the south east of England.

Impressive. Any gems of wisdom you learned from working on this that you’d like to pass on?
