Power shift at CIPR on track after AGM vote

A major restructure of the CIPR's decision-making bodies has come closer to reality after being rubber-stamped at the body's AGM.

Moves to reduce the CIPR council size from 50 down to 30 and shift its decision-making powers to a 10-strong executive board were given the nod in a series of votes. 

At last night’s meeting a vote to amend the institute’s charter and by-laws ahead of the changes passed with 107 votes in favour, seven votes against, and no abstentions.

Meanwhile, though both passed smoothly, a motion to amend regulations for the same purpose prompted a few more objections, with 99 votes in favour, 14 votes against, and no abstentions.

The proposed changes, which follow wider restructuring at the CIPR led by CEO Alastair McCapra, are now set to be given final approval by the Privy Council in the coming weeks.

Following that, it is expected a vote for the new council and president elect will take place in October or November. 

A statement from McCapra following the vote called Privy Council approval "a formality in light of members’ overwhelming support for this new structure."

It added: "These reforms are vital in overhauling some of our ways of working, which have held us back in making decisions as rapidly and effectively as we need to.

"They will bring us into line with the best practice among professional bodies across a broad range of disciplines and are necessary for the CIPR to operate as it needs to and provide effective leadership for the profession."

Also given the go-ahead were changes stating that to be join the board members will have to be either an accredited or chartered public relations practitioner, meaning they must have actively engaged in continuing professional development (CPD) for at least two years.
