Habits: Tara-Nicholle Nelson, MyFitnessPal

Tara-Nicholle Nelson, VP, marketing at MyFitnessPal talks about Android phones, her dogs, and Giuliana and Bill.

Morning ritual
I get up early, around 4:45am. I get my kale smoothie together and drink it with a green tea chaser while I meditate, pray, and read something inspirational. Then I try to get my dogs, Aiko and Sumiko, out for a two-mile walk.

Biggest surprise on your iPhone/iPod
The biggest surprise is that I use an Android phone.

Daily required reading
The Bible, The New York Times, Hello Healthy (the MyFitnessPal blog), The Wall Street Journal, TechCrunch, Fast Company, and a slew of health and fitness blogs and magazines.

Best career advice
This one was powerful, but also one of the simplest: "Remember the Sabbath, to keep it holy." Multiple people have also told me to take at least one day off per week.

First PR job
Doing digital content, spokesperson, and eventually PR strategy work as a consultant for HGTV/Scripps Networks.

First website or app checked in the morning
It is always Pandora, to listen to gospel music stations during my dog walk.

Most distinct aspect of your personal office
My pug bookends, which remind me of my girls. I do tend to spend a fair amount of my non-meeting work time walking on our office’s shared treadmill desks, though – visitors are often intrigued by them.

Most regrettable career moment
I wake up with the deep realization that my convoluted career path is precisely what brought me here and equipped me with the interpersonal, leadership, and subject-matter skill set I have. No regrets.

Proudest career achievement
I’ve had so many wonderful moments, but the best so far has probably been when I was hired for my current role.

Ideal day off
A hike with the dogs, then a dance class or boot camp, followed by brunch with friends. Then lots of reading, ideally historical fiction like Elizabeth Gilbert’s The Signature of All Things. It’s basically my normal weekend routine.

Guilty TV pleasure
I have a few. Shameless on Showtime, Rick Steves’ Europe, and Giuliana and Bill – I can’t help it, they’re adorable.
