Scene & Erred: Ellwood Atfield gallery hosts Cameron in the flesh and Miliband in spirit

Ed Miliband appeared in spirit and David Cameron in the flesh at the opening of a new show by the Prime Minister's favourite photographer at the Ellwood Atfield gallery on Tuesday night.

Cameron seemed to like what he saw when he dropped in for a quick look at the pictures by Andrew Parsons and a photo opportunity with the recruitment consultancy’s founders Gavin Ellwood and Ben Atfield.

Not only was the picture selection heavy on portraits of the PM and other Tory big beasts Boris Johnson and George Osborne (who also visited later on), but it included one of Labour leader Ed Miliband getting egged for good measure.

Miliband’s stance on big business cropped up frequently as the lobbyist-heavy crowd swigged Champagne provided by event sponsor Maitland, which was out in force with a contingent including chief executive Neil Bennett and public affairs chief Pete Bowyer.

One corporate affairs head recounted buttonholing Miliband last year at a Labour business reception with a plea for respect for their company, which employs thousands of people in the UK.

Apparently Miliband listened attentively… right up until it emerged the company was in the payday loans business.

Probably more to Miliband’s taste was the charity aspect of the exhibition. Parsons is raising funds for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, where his daughter is being treated for leukaemia, from sales of the pictures on display, which include his war and royalty portfolio.

Perhaps Ed will pop in and buy the action shot of his egging.
