NGOs can be cutting edge too

Agony uncle and University of Westminster's visiting professor of PR Trevor Morris gives it to you straight.

I’m in my late twenties. I’ve been working in a consultancy for three years. I have been offered a communications role with a major NGO. Should I take it or will I never get back into mainstream PR?

NGOs are now mainstream. They are the main critical or counter voice to business in many areas of government. Consequently business, consultancies and the public sector are understandably keen to employ those who have worked for the other side – like NATO hiring a former Russian general.

Some of the most notable contemporary PR is done by NGOs. With that kind of experience you will have no trouble getting back into what you call mainstream PR.
