NYPD Twitter campaign goes awry
The New York Police Department took the wraps off the #myNYPD hashtag on Tuesday, asking Big Apple residents to post pictures of themselves with officers or other (presumably positive) interactions with the force. It quickly went in the other direction and was overrun with images of alleged police brutality, including rough treatment of protesters at the Occupy Wall Street rallies in late 2011 and early 2012.

Twitter eyes German market
Twitter has made a big move to expand its footprint in Germany, hiring Thomas de Buhr, formerly Google’s director of branding for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. He will start at the social media platform in August and build a sales team that will work with ad agencies in the country.

The result of this week’s pharma M&A mash-up: specialization
After decades of pharma giants working to diversify their drug portfolios, this week’s flurry of deals in the space shows they’re reversing course, instead specializing their offerings, according to an analysis in The Wall Street Journal. Novartis sold most of its vaccines division to GlaxoSmithKline, but bought the company’s cancer-drug unit on Tuesday morning. It moved its animal health business to Eli Lilly.

GM tries to deflect Cobalt lawsuits
General Motors filed a motion on Tuesday in a Manhattan federal bankruptcy court that would protect it from dozens of lawsuits over its handling of defective ignition switches in Chevrolet Cobalts. It cited a provision that says the company is not responsible for actions that took place before its 2009 restructuring. GM also broadened its oversight of problematic vehicles.

Letterman passes the torch
In a break from the late-night wars of the past, David Letterman hosted successor Stephen Colbert on the Late Show Tuesday night. "You look right at home," Letterman said to Colbert, who was dressed and styled dissimilarly from his faux-Bill O’Reilly character from The Colbert Report.
