LONDON: Virgin Galactic has picked Edelman to handle its six-figure global PR account in the build-up to its first commercial flight into space.
It selected the agency after a nine-month search involving pitches in both the UK and US, with the account covering duties from consumer and corporate messaging to brand partnerships. It is understood that Virgin Galactic is still working with Griffin Communications, though the nature of that assignment is not clear.
Edelman will have global responsibilities with a particular focus on the US, UK, and Europe.
News of the appointment comes as Virgin Galactic plans to launch its first shuttle into space in the next year.
"We were impressed by the Edelman team’s insight and perspective on our pioneering project," said Virgin Galactic commercial director Stephen Attenborough. "They have strong creative credentials and strength in depth, as well as the global reach that our brand requires. We look forward to working with them and our other agencies in this pivotal year for our space program."
Earlier this week, Virgin Galactic named Land Rover as its first sponsor for the venture, for which it has sold seats on flights for $250,000 each.
