Extension PR brings on Burke as chief of staff

Kevin Burke has reunited with former Hill & Knowlton Irvine colleagues Matt Paget and Mike Haas in a newly created role at Extension.

LOS ANGELES: Extension PR has appointed Kevin Burke to serve in the newly created position of chief of staff and VP. He started in the role last week.

Burke, who previously spent four years at lifestyle agency Kurent, is working on accounts such as Ducati and Aston Martin and reporting to managing partners Matt Paget and Mike Haas.

Paget, Haas, and Burke all previously worked together at Hill & Knowlton’s Irvine, CA, office in 2004. Burke said all three had their agency orientation on the same day, a decade ago this month.

Leading a team of eight staffers at Extension, Burke is focusing on media relations and account strategy, as well as helping brands engage new audiences and media targets.

Burke said he is also working with the agency’s staffers to track efforts week-to-week and make sure the firm is delivering the necessary resources for clients.

Paget said the agency created the role for Burke to support Extension’s growth and allow senior leaders to continue working one-on-one with clients.

"Unlike most agencies' leadership, [Haas] and I spend the majority of our time engaging the media and serving as the day-to-day contacts for our clients," he explained. "Every form of communication on high-profile accounts is public-facing, and we believe Extension clients deserve to have the same senior folks both developing and executing strategy."

Burke said he would also like to explore new business opportunities and further diversify the range of accounts across the firm.

"Knowing [Paget] and [Haas] for the last 10 years, I know their knowledge and skills in the industry, and it’s really an honor to work together with them," added Burke. "Seeing how far they’ve come is just great to see, so I’m excited to be part of it."

Prior to Kurent, Burke spent a year as a consultant for Sydney, Australia-based Launch Group. Before that, he worked at Hill & Knowlton in Australia for more than a year after spending more than three years in the firm’s Irvine, CA, office.

Burke also previously worked at Momentum, Octagon, and NBCOlympics.com.

Extension, which recently launched a social media practice, will move into a larger office in West Hollywood, CA, this summer. Paget and Haas, both former directors at Rogers & Cowan, launched the firm in July 2011. Its other clients include Silver Oak & Twomey Cellars, Zevia, Tongal, and Arad Productions.

This story was updated on March 17 at 12 pm to correct the clients that Burke will work on.
