Nancy Assuncao, the publicist and marketing director for celebrity chef Paula Deen for the last six years, has resigned after Deen endorsed a diabetes drug.
Earlier this month, Deen said she was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Since she knew about the illness for three years, she received a lot of negative feedback from consumers and media outlets for continuing to cook with fatty, sodium-packed foods despite her diagnosis.
Assuncao told the New York Post last night that “although we had a great deal of fun along the way, I could not agree with the new business strategy going forward. Nonetheless, I wish them continued success.”
It's not surprising Assuncao parted ways with Deen, especially if she advised her against the endorsement and the celebrity chef went through with it anyway. Maybe Deen should have listened to Assuncao. After all, the publicist did help her build her empire, which now includes cookbooks, TV shows, restaurants, and more.
