SUNNYVALE, CA: Brad Williams, former VP of global communications at Groupon, has joined Weber Shandwick to lead its North American global technology practice.
He will be responsible for supporting major client assignments and driving growth in North America.
Williams will work from the firm's Sunnyvale, CA, office and report to Heidi Sinclair, president of Weber's global technology practice.
The agency works with tech-sector companies including Amazon and HP, according to PRWeek's 2011 Agency Business Report. NetGear and RightNow Technologies hired the firm last year, however it lost Juniper Networks to Edelman in 2011. Longstanding client BAE Systems named Weber AOR last fall.
Williams left Groupon last August after just two months with the daily deals operator, stating he and the company agreed “it wasn't a fit.” Prior to joining Groupon last June, Williams was VP of worldwide corporate communications at VeriSign from September 2009 to November 2010, and VP of corporate communications at Yahoo from March 2008 to April 2009. He has also served as VP of communications at eBay, and director of communications at Gateway.
Groupon filed for its initial public offering last June, seeking to raise $750 million. However, regulators began to scrutinize the company's accounting methods soon thereafter, concerned about the metrics it used to market itself to investors.
A Weber representative could not be immediately reached for comment.
