SAN FRANCISCO: Telecom company Telefonica Digital has hired Pamela Kline Smith as head of communications for North America.
Telefonica digital launches emerging digital products and services, such as apps, for consumers and the company's commercial brands.
Smith is responsible for raising the visibility of Telefonica Digital in North America through PR and events. She will also work to spread the word about what the company is working on, such as its VC arm and partnerships with other Silicon Valley companies. Smith reports to David Nicholas, director of global communications.
Smith began working for the company in late March. Previously, she was CMO and EVP of marketing at Teleperformance, a call center outsourcing company. Smith has also led marketing at three Silicon Valley-based start-ups: LiveOps, Metreo, and Arcot Systems. Previously, she spent 10 years as a partner at Regis McKenna.Telefonica Digital has also named Access Communications AOR for North America and Bite Communications UK its global lead agency. Both companies were selected following a multi-round competitive review. Telefonica digital did not previously work with an agency in the US or Europe, Smith said.
“Our real focus in Europe and here is on communications, PR, and media strategies,” Smith said. “We don't plan on doing a lot of advertising; communications is the bulk.”
Access is tasked with raising awareness of the company, and its products and services, in the US. It will focus on Silicon Valley, as well as other North American tech centers where Telefonica has a presence, such as New York, Boston, and Austin, TX, said Michael Young, SVP at Access.
Access will assist with corporate positioning, thought leadership, executive visibility, social media, and partner communications. Bite will also work to raise awareness of Telefonica Digital, in addition to a strong focus on thought leadership, mainly from the company's London office.
