DALLAS: Burson-Marsteller has hired Matt Burns as Southwest public affairs market leader and MD for its US public affairs practice.
Prior to joining Burson, Burns was director of corporate communications at UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement, where he oversaw communications activities involving internal exchanges, legal, government affairs, regulatory, marketing, and sales.
Burns will be based in Dallas and report to Nate Tibbits, chair of Burson's US public affairs practice. He is taking over duties previously held by Mike Lake, former chair of both the public affairs practice and Burson's US Southwest region, who left the firm after stepping down from his public affairs role in January. Burson is searching for a new Southwest regional chair, said Paul Cordasco, MD of global marketing and communications at the firm.
Before working with UnitedHealthcare, Burns ran Compelem Strategies, a firm counseling non-profit, corporate, and political clients. He also served as director of communications for the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul, MN, and press secretary for the US Department of Veteran Affairs during President George W. Bush's administration.
