NEW YORK: Hill+Knowlton Strategies has hired Gary Goldhammer as US chief digital strategist, a new position.
Goldhammer is based in Los Angeles and reporting to global digital practice director Andrew Bleeker. He is responsible for business development, the implementation of digital strategies for clients, and development of the digital practice.
Goldhammer said he was attracted to the position because of the firm's size, staff, and its viewpoint on digital and integrating it across the entire agency. His first day at the firm was Monday.
"I think at a macro level, the pendulum is swinging back a bit toward PR firms being the strategic leader in the digital space. There has been a lot of competition with advertising firms and marketing firms, and everyone trying to be the expert,” he said. "But with the renewed emphasis on story and content, PR is the place where digital needs to lead from.”
Prior to joining H+K, Goldhammer was EVP and head of West Coast client service at digital marketing agency Velocidi, where he led regional business and service development and oversaw client teams since fall 2010. Previously, he was SVP of digital strategy and development at Edelman, where he worked on accounts such as eBay, HP, and Adobe. He also helped to grow Edelman's West Coast digital business from a few people to more than 65, he said.
Goldhammer has also worked as a journalist for the Associated Press, United Press International, and other organizations.
H+K also hired Josh Hendler as global chief technology officer in January.
