BETHESDA, MD: Abt Associates has hired Stephanie Marshall, former communications director for the US Department of Health and Human Services, as principal associate.
Marshall will manage health communications projects for the agency's clients, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality, and the National Institutes of Health. She will report to Carol Schechter, VP of the health communications and social marketing at the firm.
After seven years and various positions at HHS, Marshall said she wanted to go into a different direction. “I was looking for new challenges,” Marshall said.
Her notable projects for HHS included creating and directing the department's pandemic flu preparations and serving as first lady Michelle Obama's communications director for the “Let's Move!” initiative, which focuses on fighting childhood obesity.
She was most recently HHS' director of communications. She also served as the department's director for pandemic communications and deputy director for internal affairs. Previously, Marshall was VP for Porter Novelli and director of governmental affairs of the National Health Council, a nonprofit.
“[My background] allows me to see how public policy, public health, and politics intersect and advance an issue,” she said.
Marshall's departure comes seven months after Richard Sorian, former assistant secretary for public affairs at HHS, left the department.
