NEW YORK: PR and public affairs shop SKDKnickerbocker has hired Michael Morey, communications director for US Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY), as VP in its New York City office.
Morey will replace Casey Klurfeld, who left the firm earlier this year. The agency does not have a traditional direct reporting structure, but he will oversee eight to 10 staffers in the New York office along with three SVPs and two VPs, said Stefan Friedman, MD of the firm.
“For a business like ours, we need someone who will be aggressive and who knows the political and media worlds in New York and Washington,” he said. “There's no better training ground than Chuck Schumer's office.”
While the firm's sweet spot is public affairs in New York and Washington DC, it has expanded to take on corporate work and clients across the north Mid-Atlantic region.
“He really matches up with what the firm was founded on. This was originally a public affairs firm but has expanded to do corporate, and he has the ability to know what is a story and how to communicate it through all mediums,” said Friedman.
Morey has worked in Schumer's office for nearly six years, most recently handling New York-focused media and strategy as communications director. Previously, he was Schumer's Hudson Valley regional director, overseeing intergovernmental relations and serving as a point person on regional issues.
Morey also ran the Morey, Ryan, and Epstein communications consulting shop before joining Schumer's office.
