WASHINGTON: Waggener Edstrom Worldwide has hired Ben Finzel as SVP, public affairs, and general manager of the firm's Washington, DC office.
Finzel will manage a team of five people and report to Colleen Beauregard, SVP and general manager for the northeast region at WE. It is the first time he has managed an office.
“This a quite a shift for me in terms of opportunity and responsibility and that's really exciting,” Finzel said.
He was chosen for the role because he is “a big thinker who has brought campaigns to life across innovation-based industry sectors,” said Jenny Moede, president of WE North America, in a statement.
Finzel's predecessor was Joe Farren, who left WE April 30 to join Weber Shandwick as EVP of its DC tech practice and tech policy lead. Finzel has spent the last three years running the public affairs practice at Widmeyer Communications.
He worked with clients including the American Energy Innovation Council, National Association for the Self-Employed, and US Consumer Product Safety Commission.
“This is a global firm and the opportunities are larger,” Finzel said. “There is more that we can do.”
In the coming months, his goals are to extend the reputation of the public affairs practice at WE and build awareness of the firm in the DC market, he said.
Prior to his time at Widmeyer, Finzel was a presidential appointee at the US Department of Energy during the Clinton administration, where he managed communications for its office of energy efficiency and renewable energy.
