In 2011, CCO turnover at Fortune 500 companies was similar to that of other executive positions, such as CEO and CFO, and nearly half of corporations changed or created new communications leader positions during that time. Surprisingly, companies chose to hire a communications chief from outside their organizations most of the time, with external hires at 52%. The energy sector saw the highest rate of CCO turnover last year at 22%, noticeably ahead of the consumer, healthcare, and technology industries.
