CHICAGO: MSLGroup has hired Brad Wilks as MD of its Midwest operations, succeeding Joel Curran, who became MD of the firm's New York office in September.

Wilks is overseeing MSLGroup's Chicago and Detroit offices, responsible for business strategy and growth, client service, and talent, beginning Monday. He is reporting to North America president Renee Wilson.

Wilks was previously MD and head of Sard Verbinnen & Co.'s Chicago office for the past seven years, during which time he counseled clients in corporate issues including bankruptcies and restructurings, proxy contests, litigation, executive transitions, and crisis communications. Last week, SVC promoted 18-year agency veteran Debbie Miller to replace Wilks as head of its Chicago office.

“What I bring is a little bit broader professional background in areas that [MSLGroup] wants to grow in,” Wilks said. “The differences will clearly be that when you go from a relatively small office to something much bigger, it's going to be a different animal in how you lead it.”

Wilson said in a statement that Wilks' “expertise and leadership will enable us to take our corporate communications capabilities in the Midwest and in North America to the next level.”

MSL Chicago has 44 employees and serves clients such as DeVry University, home products brand Delta Faucet, and companies in the food and beverage sector. With 16 staffers, MSL Detroit focuses primarily on the agency's General Motors account and the automotive industry.

Wilks has also served as MD and head of the Chicago office at Ogilvy Public Relations for six years and as SVP and partner at Fleishman-Hillard.

Last September, Curran assumed responsibility for MSL New York's nearly 200 staffers, as well as its client relationships and office operations. New York is MSL's largest office.

The Publicis Groupe agency promoted Renee Wilson to North America president the month prior. She replaced Jim Tsokanos, who left the role after 11 years at the agency.

This article was updated on January 28 to specify the exact number of staffers in MSLGroup's Chicago and Detroit offices.
