Michelman to depart Visa amid marcomms restructure

FOSTER CITY, CA: Doug Michelman, Visa's global head of corporate relations, will exit the company at the end of next month amidst a restructuring of its communications and marketing departments.

FOSTER CITY, CA: Doug Michelman, Visa's global head of corporate relations, will exit the company at the end of next month amidst a restructuring of its communications and marketing departments.

Michelman, who has worked at Visa since January 2003, has served under four CEOs. His tenure included the electronic payment company's merger of its US, Canada, and international units in October 2007, which was followed by the largest IPO in US history in March 2008, raising $17.9 billion.

It is understood that Visa is moving its corporate relations department under marketing, and Michelman's role will not be filled. Visa CMO Antonio Lucio leads the company's marketing.

“Looking ahead, I am ready for the next great opportunity and the challenges and excitement that comes with that,” said Michelman, in an emailed statement. “I will wrap up things here at Visa over the next few weeks and then take a short break.” 

At Visa, Michelman oversaw corporate relations activities including global media and analyst relations, issues and crisis management, communications programs, and digital communications strategies. He also played a role in the brand evolving its identity after the merger.

Prior to Visa, Michelman worked at Fleishman-Hillard from 2000 to 2002, serving as West Coast regional president. He also worked at the Omnicom Group agency from 1988 to 1996, holding roles such as SVP and GM in Los Angeles and SVP and GM in Hong Kong.

Between stints at Fleishman, Michelman served as VP of corporate communications at Pacific Bell for three years. He also worked at Edelman from 1986 to 1987, serving as a VP in its New York office.
