NEWTON, MA: TripAdvisor has appointed Desiree Fish, former VP of corporate affairs and communications at American Express, as VP of global communications.
Fish, who is based in the company's New York office, is reporting to CMO Barbara Messing. She is tasked with leading all of TripAdvisor's communications around the world, as well as increasing awareness of the brand. Fish started in the role on July 15.
In 2009, Michele Perry, former VP of global communications, left TripAdvisor and was not replaced until Fish was hired. While Fish has the same title as Perry, her scope of work is broader because the company has grown in terms of staff and its global markets since then.
The communications team that Fish is running includes 20 staffers globally.
Fish said she is focused on meeting all of her staffers and finding out what the brand does well, then trying to improve it.
During her 13-year career at American Express, Fish led numerous PR initiatives and helped create brand projects, social media campaigns, and philanthropy programs. Most recently, she oversaw external communications for the company's consumer services business and led PR for its consumer charge cards, lending and co-brand cards, loyalty program, and travel business.
Previously, Fish worked at Hunter Public Relations as an account supervisor. While at the firm, she managed media relations programs and events for clients such as Campbell's Soup. She also worked on lifestyle and travel while at American Express.
Fish said one reason she decided to join TripAdvisor is her love of travel.
“It's hard not to be passionate about travel, and it's a brand that I have been using for a number of years,” she explained.
