APCO promotes Fernandez to executive director

APCO Worldwide has named agency veteran Nelson Fernandez as executive director in its New York office.

NEW YORK: APCO Worldwide has promoted Nelson Fernandez, MD of the firm's New York office, to executive director. He started in the dual role earlier this month.

Fernandez, who joined APCO eight years ago, will continue to report to Robert Schooling, president of the Americas.

While the agency is working to define Fernandez's exact role as executive director, he said it will build on what he has done in the New York office and include regional business strategy and planning.

“APCO has made a concerted effort to focus on business strategy and planning, making sure that our MDs are aligned on the regional strategies to have a more focused approach on staffing, investments, and targeting clients that fall into APCO's sweet spots,” explained Fernandez.

As executive director, Fernandez said he will contribute to this process and help further alignment across US regions.

He will focus on organic and new client growth and contribute insights to companies that bring together the corporate and public affairs sectors.

Fernandez added that he will also take the strategies used to develop the New York office to other regions.

APCO has nearly 50 staffers in New York. The office is managing its BlackBerry and Ikea accounts, both of which were won this year after competitive reviews. The firm's global corporate work for Mars is also led by its New York location.

Fernandez, who was promoted to MD in 2009, was brought on in 2005 as SVP at APCO.  Previously, he spent more than 12 years at Burson-Marsteller, most recently as MD.
