SEATTLE: Kate James, CCO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will join education and publishing company Pearson in January.
She will take the role of chief corporate affairs officer, succeeding Pearson's director of communications, Luke Swanson, who is leading the company's reorganization of its business around its global education strategy.
In July, the company spun off book publisher Penguin into a joint venture with Bertelsmann, the owner of rival publisher Random House.
James ranked No. 25 on the most recent edition of PRWeek's Power List, recognized for the global reach of her organization and its resources.
She was named to her most recent position as CCO of the Gates Foundation in January 2010, replacing Heidi Sinclair. Sinclair started her own consultancy, then joined Weber Shandwick as president of the firm's global technology practice in late 2010.
James previously served as SVP for global communications at Citibank from 2008 to 2010; head of public affairs and later group head of public affairs and strategy at Standard Chartered Bank from 2004 to 2008; and VP of external affairs in the UK for GlaxoSmithKline.
