SAN FRANCISCO: The Wikimedia Foundation has issued a two-pronged RFP that solicits agencies to help boost the organization's fundraising efforts and build the credibility of its popular Wikipedia site.
The RFP, posted on the Wikimedia Web site, closes later this month, and the organization plans to make a decision next month, said Jay Walsh head of communications for the Wikimedia Foundation.
Wikimedia plans to hire one or multiple agencies to work on a retainer over the next year to support two key efforts. The more traditional PR task involves targeting key audiences with stories about the site's nonprofit mission and its volunteers.
Walsh acknowledged that the company faces "a tough media environment, but that's consequence of having an open platform."
The RFP also solicits agencies to develop creative strategies to help Wikimedia reach its goal to raise $6.5 million this year.
“We're looking for ways to simplify our fundraising process and make it more authentic,” Walsh noted.
He noted that the organization is open to a PR, digital, or advertising agency to lead the initiatives. He declined to disclose the targeted budget – which is not listed in the RFP – but said the dollar figure “is not embarrassingly small.” The organization also remains open to working with an agency on a pro-bono basis.
Wikimedia has previously worked with Peppercom and Solid Ground on a project basis.
