NEW YORK: NBC News launched The Grio, a video-focused news Web site targeting black consumers, on June 8.
The site, named for a term for a West African storyteller, also features news and opinion pieces on breaking news, politics, health, business, faith, and entertainment topics. The portal also uses NBC News' archive video footage and columns by outside contributors.
David Wilson, a documentarian and the site's managing editor, said that The Grio was launched to fill a void of feature content focused on black Americans' stories.
“As an African-American news consumer, you don't see too many human interest pieces – soft pieces – of interest, but if you scour the country, you can collect those pieces and give the African-American consumer a greater experience in the news,” he said.
Research The Grio conducted shows that the site will have a core demographic of black consumers about 35 years old skewing slightly female, Wilson added.
The portal's six-person full-time staff is based in New York.
NBC Universal's internal communications staff is supporting the launch.
