John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods, published an opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal on August 11, arguing against a government-sponsored healthcare plan and the current solutions being offered in the reform debate.

The reaction from some Whole Foods customers has been so critical of Mackey and his stance on healthcare reform that the company developed an online forum on its Web site to discuss the issue. As of August 18, a Boycott Whole Foods page on Facebook has more than 13,000 fans.

The Journal reports that bloggers are encouraging customers to boycott Whole Foods and participate in protests outside of stores, while Time writes, "Mackey's missive was a bold entrance into a polarizing political debate, or a shortsighted business blunder that will only alienate his customer base."
