Today I attended an event at the Southwest Porch, an outdoor lounge set up in New York's Bryant Park, celebrating the start Southwest Airlines serving LaGuardia Airport. Hosted by Ginger Hardage, SVP of communications, and five other Southwest employees, the event was a chance to introduce the media and corporate partners to the airline, which has not flown out of the New York metro area before.

The Porch, which opened on June 19 and runs through mid-September, is a way to demonstrate the relaxed Southwest culture, Hardage said, and educate consumers about the airline and how to purchase tickets, which are only available online through Southwest.com. Hardage also answered questions from the crowd, discussing communication with its employees and its presence on Twitter.

"We're a 38-year-old brand that tries to continually reinvent ourselves," she added.
