KANSAS CITY: Barkley said August 24 that it planned to acquire Boasberg\Wheeler Communications, a communications firm also based in Kansas City. It is Barkley's first acquisition of a PR agency.

Barkley and Boasberg\Wheeler had worked together as the advertising and PR AORs for UMB Financial Corporation, respectively, since 2007 and will continue to include UMB as a client. Boasberg\Wheeler clients, including Buck Consultants, Power Partners, and Coventry Health Care, will also be added to the Barkley client roster, according to Mike Swenson, EVP CMO and founder of Barkley's PR practice.

Boasberg\Wheeler's nine employees will be folded into Barkley's PR division when the acquisition closes at the end of the month. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, although the agency said that the combined PR division will now report $6 million in income. Barkley reported $4.7 million in revenue for 2008.
