According to multiple media reports, the US military terminated a contract with The Rendon Group, the public affairs firm charged with creating background profiles of reporters who cover US operations in Afghanistan.

Both the military and the firm have denied that the profiles, which rated reporters' coverage as positive, negative, or neutral, were used to decide which journalists would be embedded. Officials said the $1.5 million contract was terminated because the news was a distraction.

The firm provided a statement on its Web site on August 26, defending the media analysis it provided as part of the contract.
