DETROIT: General Motors' VP of communications is moving into a new, non-PR role at the automaker. GM appointed Chris Preuss to the position of VP and president for OnStar, its car safety and vehicle security company, as part of GM's continued restructuring.

Preuss took over the top communications role at GM in October 2009 when Steve Harris retired. A management structuring change at the end of last year meant that Preuss began reporting in directly to CEO Ed Whitacre, whom he continues to report to in this new role. Preuss has worked at GM for more than a decade.

The company said a replacement will be named at a later date.
