The communications director of New York Governor David Paterson has quit as an ethics scandal continues to unfold around the governor.
CNN reports that Peter Kauffmann, a former Hillary Clinton spokesperson and US Navy Intelligence Officer, handed in his resignation earlier today.
Peter Kauffmann, Paterson's communications director for over a year, said in a statement, "I cannot in good conscience continue in my current position."
Kauffmann's resignation comes a day after New York's Commission on Public Integrity charged Paterson with an ethics violation for accepting free tickets to the first game of last year's World Series. The commission also said Paterson lied under oath about intending to pay for the tickets.
He is reportedly the third staff member to quit since questions were raised into how Governor Paterson received a set of Yankees World Series tickets and how he handled an aide's alleged domestic abuse case. As the lead spokesman for the governor, Kauffmann, also former Glover Park executive, had directly handled press inquires about both incidents.
