HARTFORD, CT: The Hartford Financial Services Group selected Edelman to support the company's bicentennial efforts, following a competitive bid.

Edelman was hired February 22 for the project, said Michael Holland, EVP and group head of CSR at Edelman, who is leading the account. The Hartford celebrates its bicentennial May 10.

Connie Weaver, SVP of marketing and communications for The Hartford until April 23, told PRWeek that the company did not have a “formal incumbent” for the work Edelman is slated to do.

TIAA-CREF announced in mid-April that it had hired Weaver, who joined The Hartford in 2008, as an EVP and chief marketing and communications officer, starting April 26.

“There are many talented agencies out there,” said Weaver. “But this one really fits where we are now and what we need now. They will be a strategic partner as we move forward and execute on our strategy.”

The Hartford worked with CJP Communications for five years before ending its relationship with the firm during the financial crisis in 2009, said Eric Blinderman, senior consultant for CJP. He said the firm did not pitch for the account in the recent review.

Weaver declined to provide information about the budget or the other agencies that pitched the account.
