NEW YORK: IBM has released a new version of its SPSS Modeler data mining and text analytics software, which has the ability to analyze internal data with information gleaned from social media sites.

Enhancements to the software include a feature that extracts sentiment on social media sites from the use of emoticons, like smiley faces and frowns, next to a company name or brand. It can also decipher meaning from lingo that people often use in describing their views toward products and services.

IBM has positioned SPSS Modeler to the marketing and CRM departments of Fortune 500 companies and SMBs.
