Although the “Perspectives” blog went live one day before Exxon's CEO testified on Capitol Hill with other oil industry executives, the company said that plans for the blog had been in place for several months.
“It was not created to deal with the oil spill,” said Alan Jeffers, media relations manager for Exxon. He noted that the blog acts as an extension of the communications team's decades-long Op-Ed program.
Ken Cohen, VP of public and government affairs, penned the first two posts on the blog – both addressing the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Future posts are expected to address “the big issues these days in energy policy” with a goal to encourage conversation, said Jeffers.
Cohn & Wolfe, the company's social media agency, is providing support for the blog. The firm referred questions to Exxon.
