On Tuesday, Bloomberg reported that Verizon Wireless, the largest mobile phone provider in the US, is due to start selling Apple's iPhone in January 2011. The contract with Verizon will bring to an end AT&T's exclusive service contract with Apple and boost Verizon in competition for smartphone customers.
Bloomberg cited two individuals who claimed to be familiar with Apple's future plans—they declined to be named because the information has not been released to the public. Representatives for both Verizon Wireless and Apple declined to comment on reports.
Verizon Wireless, a venture between Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group, is developing a high-speed, fourth-generation service and plans to unveil several devices that will run on the new network at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.
