China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology is still examining Google's application to renew its operating license, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday. The announcement was the government's first comment on Google's status since last month.
A spokesperson for the ministry said Google's application came close to the deadline, pushing back the approval process. Google announced it was resubmitting its renewal application after making alterations to the website in response to criticism from the Chinese government.
Chinese officials objected to Google's strategy of redirecting users to the uncensored Hong Kong website. Google has since stopped the redirect; a single link to the Hong Kong site is now available from mainland China's site.
Representatives declined to say whether approval was probable for Google.
