IBM's Iwata keeps CEO remit under new reporting line

ARMONK, NY: IBM comms trailblazer Jon Iwata will still counsel chief executive officer Sam Palmisano despite the fact he will now report to Virginia Rometty, who added marketing and strategy to her sales brief in a reshuffle announced on July 20.

IBM changed the responsibilities of several of its executives, including Rometty, the SVP who will now oversee marketing and strategy in addition to her previous responsibilities managing sales and distribution.

Iwata, SVP of marketing and communications, will now report to Rometty rather than directly to Palmisano, though he will still counsel the IBM chairman and CEO.

Ed Barbini, VP of external relations for IBM, told PRWeek that the moves, which are taking place in various units at IBM, will encourage better teamwork.

"Jon's in charge of marketing and communications," he explained, emphasizing that Iwata's responsibilities will not change as a result of these moves.
