PALO ALTO: Facebook has marked its breaking of the 500 million member mark by launching a dedicated page for PR professionals.
The popular social networking website based in Palo Alto launched Facebook PR, a page the company touts as an arena for communications professionals to discuss and share how they use the site for their work, and to learn how the company's own communications team uses the site for its own PR.
“For some time our colleagues have asked us how we use Facebook for PR,” said Malorie Lucich, communications associate at the company and administrator of the page. “It serves as a forum to answer the questions we can answer.”
The page stems from a Facebook-hosted event last week for PR professionals, but Lucich said the team had been thinking about creating the page for a while. An hour-long video of the event is posted on the page, which is a “continuation of the event,” she added.
The page serves as a working example of how fast news and information can spread over social media. Within days, several hundred Facebook members became fans of the page. “The growth has been encouraging. I hope agencies endorse it,” Lucich said.
The company still employs a sizeable PR team, including the services of San Francisco-based OutCast Communications.
