SILVER SPRING, MD: The FDA's drug division named Paul Buckman its first director of online communications.

Buckman will report to Julie Zawisza, director of the office of communications at the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER). He is responsible for managing the CDER website and its strategic direction, including any social media channels the division may start using.

Buckman said he plans to focus on making the CDER site “more consumer-friendly,” as well as assessing the site's messaging and video usage.

Prior to joining FDA, Buckman held online content positions at Scripps Networks Interactive and MSNBC.com, where he helped Ann Curry launch her blog. Most recently, he was director of broadband programming at Scripps Networks Interactive in Knoxville, TN.

Earlier this month, Beth Martino told PRWeek the FDA was making plans to launch a presence on Facebook, Flickr, and through a blog. Martino is associate commissioner for external affairs at the FDA.
