Whole Foods is working with chef Ann Cooper to gather fundraising for a new program that will put salad bars in public schools.

The company is asking the public to donate online at www.saladbarproject.org to raise money for the salad bars, which cost about $2,500 for each school. The schools, located within 50 miles of a Whole Foods store, can also apply for a grant.

Just last week, the Senate passed legislation that would give $4.5 billion over the next decade to create new food standards in schools, provide healthier food options, and increase the number of students who qualify for free or reduced-cost meals.

A bill similar to the Child Nutrition Act is pending in the House of Representatives.
