BLOOMFIELD, CT: Cigna named Maggie FitzPatrick, an executive at APCO Worldwide, its chief communications officer, starting September 20.

FitzPatrick, who will lead global communications for the health insurer, will report to David Cordani, Cigna's president and CEO since December 2009. She is an EVP in the Washington office of APCO Worldwide, where she has worked since 1997.

FitzPatrick told PRWeek that, during her time at APCO, she learned to apply "innovative communications techniques to corporate clients" and was looking forward to doing the same at Cigna. At APCO, she worked with corporate clients in the transportation, financial services, and technology sectors.

She also said she will handle global communications, including how the company communicates in diverse markets.

Gene Reineke, chief operating officer at Hill & Knowlton, has been leading communications on an interim basis for Cigna since January 2010.

In this role, Reineke created a team to handle the company's response to the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act earlier this year. The team is made up of staff members from the communications, legal, government affairs, marketing, sales, training, and IR departments.

FitzPatrick will be based in Bloomfield, CT.
