MEMPHIS, TN: FedEx is sticking to the basics of its crisis communications plan to manage the news of the cargo plane terror plot.
The news broke Friday that UPS and FexEx packages containing explosive devices were intercepted. Both UPS and FedEx have suspended packages coming out of Yemen. FedEx issued a statement on its website notifying customers of the suspension.
Maury Lane, director of media relations for FedEx, said that communications efforts around the investigation are being handled internally.
“When you prepare and understand crisis communication and have a plan that is part of your DNA you handle these situations the best way possible,” Lane said.
The difficulty with handling a situation that involves a security investigation, he said, is there is a limited amount of information available and a large volume of calls to field.
In regards to using social media, Lane said that the company is using it on a limited basis and as appropriate.
