PALO ALTO, CA: Facebook director of corporate communications Brandee Barker is leaving the company to start her own consultancy.
She made the announcement on her Twitter and Facebook page. Barker has been with the company for roughly four and half years. Barker said she is leaving to start her own business consultancy for early-stage tech companies.
“Through the process of deciding what I was going to do…what I am really good at it is working with startups and their founding team,” Barker said in an interview.
During her tenure she shepherd the growth of the Facebook PR team and its strategy. She was hired in 2006 when the platform was a social media startup compared to then industry leader MySpace, and the platform was only available to students with a college e-mail address.
Within weeks after being hired the platform was open to anyone with an e-mail address, and then explosive growth followed. “I got a very rapid fire of what Facebook would be like in years to come,” she said.
Barker hired Facebook's first PR team member, a team that is now about 20 people. She also hired the PR firm The OutCast Agency, which still executes much of tactical PR work for Facebook.
As part of the then-startup, she developed strategy for product positioning, media relations strategy, and telling the narrative of the company. “I hope to find that again,” she said of starting her own consultancy.
